An apparatus for the study of avoidance conditioning in fishes is described. The chamber is cylindrical in shape, with shocking electrodes placed above and below the animals, and response is defined as swimming a predetermined distance in either direction along a circumferential path. This apparatus has several advantages over the conventional shuttlebox: (1)There is little constraint on the direction of swimming; (2) the magnitude of response (swimming distance) required for avoidance can easily be varied over a wide range; and (3) variation in the effectiveness of shock with the position of the animal relative to the position of the electrodes is minimized. How Efficient Are Emotional Intelligence Trainings: A Meta-Analysis

This multilevel meta-analysis examines whether emotional intelligence (EI) can be enhanced through training and identifies training effects’ determinants. We identified 24 studies containing 28 samples aiming at increasing individual-level EI among healthy adults. The results revealed a significant moderate standardized mean change between pre- and post-measurement for the main effect of EI training, and a stable pre- to follow-up effect. Additionally, the type of EI model, dimensions of the four branch model, length, and type of publication turned out to be significant moderators. The results suggest that EI trainings should be considered effective interventions.
Nordic penal exceptionalism: A comparative, empirical analysis

Abstract Based on a survey administered in 13 prisons in England & Wales and Norway, as part of a research programme with explicitly comparative aims, this article seeks to address both the relative and absolute dimensions of the Nordic penal exceptionalism thesis. It outlines the consistently more positive results in Norway compared to England & Wales, explaining them primarily with reference to the former’s much higher quality and use of open prisons. Resume Dans la presente etude, une tâche de decision lexicale auditive a ete utilisee avec des mots consistants (dans la direction phonie-graphie) ayant beaucoup, ou au contraire, peu « d’amis » au sein de leur voisinage phonologique. Les mots ayant beaucoup d’amis ont conduit a des temps de decision de lexicalite plus courts que ceux en ayant peu. Ce resultat est en accord avec l’hypothese selon laquelle l’orthographe faconne la perception des mots entendus du fait d’une restructuration des representations phonologiques par les connaissances orthographiques.

Improved reliability estimates for the serial color-word test

Starting from Lennart Sjoberg's serial scoring of the Color-Word Test and his critical review of the test, the possibilities of attaining better reliability estimates are briefly surveyed. As a simple step, the orthogonalization of the regression model is suggested. Ways of maximizing the reliability estimate are demonstrated. On the basis of 261 subjects from five differing subsamples, clinical and control groups, the reliability estimates of the oblique system of the orthogonalized system and of the maximum reliability solutions are compared empirically. The significance of the results for test theoretic evaluation of the Color-Word Test is discussed.
